The Sentinel of Chenocetah Mountain

For decades, the Chenocetah Fire Tower has been a silent guardian over Cornelia. Completed in 1937 by the WPA, this 54-foot stone structure represents a bygone era of craftsmanship and forestry service.

Situated on a granite balustrade platform 1,830 feet above sea level, the tower is instantly recognizable by its peaked slate roof and stone masonry. Visitors who ascend the interior spiral staircase are walking in the footsteps of the fire lookouts who staffed the tower until 1975.

Though modern radio equipment was added in the 1970s, the tower remains a historic treasure. It was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983 and stands today as a memorial to forestry workers and a testament to the community spirit of the “Chenocetah Conservation Corps,” who work tirelessly to maintain the grounds.
